Brand Naming & Tagline Creation for Brands

A brand name is often the first decision a consumer encounters and one of the hardest to undo. At Suramya, we develop brand names and taglines for FMCG, wellness and D2C brands in India that are memorable, strategically aligned, legally available and built to scale across product lines, geographies and market segments.

What Makes a Great Brand Name?

Most Indian founders choose brand names too quickly — based on what sounds good in a meeting, what domain is available, or what the founder personally likes. These are the wrong criteria.

A great brand name earns its place strategically. It is evaluated against a set of criteria that go well beyond personal preference.

The 7 criteria for a strong brand name:

01 — Memorable Can a consumer recall it after hearing it once? Does it have a sound pattern, rhythm or distinctive quality that makes it stick in memory?

02 — Category Appropriate Does the name feel right for the category without being generic? A wellness brand name that could also be an FMCG detergent brand has a category fit problem.

03 — Strategically Aligned Does the name reflect the brand's positioning, personality and target consumer? A name that feels playful and approachable is wrong for a brand whose positioning is clinical and results-focused.

04 — Scalable Will the name work when the brand expands into new product categories, new geographies or new market segments? A name too tightly tied to one product or one benefit becomes a strategic limitation as the brand grows.

05 — Legally Available Is the name available as a trademark in your category and geography? A name that cannot be protected is a name that cannot be owned. Trademark availability is a non-negotiable check before any name is shortlisted.

06 — Digitally Available Is the domain available? Is the Instagram handle available? In today's market, a brand name without a clean digital presence starts at a disadvantage.

07 — Pronounceable Across Languages For Indian brands targeting national distribution does the name work in Hindi, regional languages and English? A name that is difficult to pronounce in Hindi will be mispronounced and mis-remembered in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets.

Our Brand Naming Process — Name Spark©

Our brand naming process — Name Spark© is a structured framework developed over 7 years of naming Indian consumer brands across FMCG, wellness, lifestyle and D2C categories.

Stage 1 — Strategic Brief We define the naming brief based on your positioning, your consumer, your category and your growth ambitions. The brief determines which naming territories to explore and which to rule out before generating a single name option.

Stage 2 — Name Generation We generate a large pool of name options across multiple naming territories descriptive, evocative, abstract, invented, founder-derived, culturally rooted. Volume at this stage gives us selection power at the shortlisting stage.

Stage 3 — Screening and Shortlisting We screen every name against the 7 criteria above eliminating names that fail on memorability, category fit, scalability, legal availability, digital availability or cross-language pronunciation. The result is a shortlist of names that pass every test.

Stage 4 — Presentation and Rationale We present the shortlisted names with full strategic rationale why each name is right for this specific brand, this specific consumer and this specific market position. Not just names. Arguments.
